AMRC Pickoff Training
Sunday, May 13, 2012, 09:20 PM - AMRC

Great training with some of the AMRC regulars at big block. We did a few different pickoff techniques: counterbalance, block and tackle, and confusing variations of the two - leading to lots of time in painful harnesses. Check out the photos for the mass confusion.

Jay Benson Tri Results

Ok run - started strong but then fell into a slower rhythm at about mile 2. Bike felt fast with all the people that I was passing, but I now know that I lost the race here. Just couldn't push harder for some reason and had slight knee pain. The swim wasn't too quick, but I was breathing every stroke and my flip turns under the lane lines didn't work out perfectly. Overall a relaxed race, with a relaxed result.

5/15 in age group.
43/196 males - 56th on the run, 62nd on the bike, and 37th on swim.
49/441 overall (male, female, and teams).

High Winds

It's so hard getting to work with a sustained 25 mph wind in your face! Especially on a Monday!

Coming back I nearly couldn't hold a turn into the wind... but I did get home in record time. I hope these are the conditions for the tri. I'd be the only one still on the bike by the end!

Weekend Workout
Sunday, April 29, 2012, 07:27 PM - Weekend Fun
Posted by Administrator
Friday - Craig and I rode up to Tijeras at lunch (21 miles) and then I met up with Ben and Leigh for a run with the new run FARR (Friday Afternoon Rescue Runners) group. Ended up doing 7.6 miles in 83 min.

Saturday - Up early and getting some vertical with my Baruntse mountaineering boots. Did a painful 6 miles and totally blistered my heals on both feet. I'm going to have to do major work with them to build up to Rainier vertical and distance! Met up with the AMRC OCC at Ranger Rock for high angle practice. It's fun being on the other side of the learning curve and helping the new guys learn the ropes. Got a beer with Lance to talk him into the Rainier trip at Molly's, a biker bar in Tijeras with live country/rock - that was an experience. Cycled downtown for a uninspiring date at Anodyne (4 mi, -400 ft elevation) and then had to ride back up in the rain and dark; how fitting.

Sunday - Final spring soccer game with Lovelace. Started the game at the top of the table of 22 second division teams. Ended in 2nd place with a sad 3-5 loss. Our defense fell apart a couple times on fast breaks. Hard to keep up when fit, young Mexicans are running at you all game. I played a mediocre left halfback and felt bad for not pressuring harder... but no injuries! I was happy to have a beer and burger with the team in celebration of a good season.

Revenge of the Elderly (5.7)

After the success on Flake 'n Bake, I had Mike come out to continue my trad climbing lessons. We climbed Revenge of the Elderly and ran into a couple work friends on the route next to us! Slab sport on the 1st pitch, which made me a little nervous. Then a little crack work to a cave/bridge on the 2nd, followed by an interesting stretch where I practiced placing nuts and cams, then running out of slings, then spaciously placing pro and finally to the top!

Week synopsys

Sunday: Soccer game with lovelace. Had a couple shots not on goal and it ended up being a 1-1 tie even though we were clearly the stronger team.

Monday: Sore from soccer, but broke out the Roubaix for the commute to work and added the 5 mile loop out to South Gate on my return ride. The aerobars are fun and fast, but slightly uncomfortable and in the high winds pretty dangerous. More training to come with these!

Weds: Tried to run some, but was really flat and could only get about 2 miles in.

Thurs: Kickball game with St. Mary's and then Cheesy Climbing Movie night at Leigh and Justin's. We watched the descent and I had glimpses of evil creatures when I got back to the house.

Fri: 9/80 gardening all day. 2 trips to Ace Hardware eventually led to "repaired" front and back drip systems. I finished setting up the garden beds, planted everything, and gave a good watering to all my thirsty seeds. Ran 4.2 Miles around the neighborhood and hit to pool for another mile.

Flake n' Bake

Led a couple laps up flake n' bake (5.5) in Lower La Cueva Canyon to break in my trad rack. I appreciate Mike and Tom's help in providing some pointers for a beginner. It took a while, but no dramas aside from organizing the double ropes while tandem belaying two partners and needing to borrow a headlamp for the 2nd climb and hike out.

Taos Yurt Weekend!
Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 08:42 PM - Weekend Fun
Posted by Administrator
Went up to Taos Friday night with Briana and Kaycie. Took about an hour to get through Espanola so we hiked up to the Yurt in the dark. We all switched into and out of our ski gear about a dozen times before the snow finally stuck around for the final mile. Even then Kaycie had a rough time of it on XC skis because it was icy. We made it to the yurt in record (slow) time of 3 hours, but had a killer pasta dinner and then passed out.

Big

The following day we three skied down the TSV for a half day of Taos lift service. I hiked a Kachina before meeting up with the rest of the gang at the Bavarian.

Big

We repacked and hiked with the gang of 9 up to the yurt. Drinks, games, cards, and a great dinner before stoking the fire and passing out for the night.

After a long morning of cleaning up everything a repacking everyone's gear we skied back down, for a couple runs on Al's. Briana was Lady Gaga; I was a snow wizard; and Josiah was lame.

To wrap up the day, the gang headed down to watch the Pond Skimming. Photos are here.

Vail and Beaver Creek Spring Break Trip with CU Folks
Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 09:19 PM - Trips

4 ski days, 1 house, 15 college aged people = one serious party!

Trouble with Vail is that you have to catch a bus to get to the lifts if you don't want to pay.

But then when you get there, the back bowls rock.

Bigger

Or, rather, they should have. There was thin cover everywhere, and no cover on the south-facing slopes. The thin slushy catwalk near the Orient Express melted out the 2nd day so no one could get to Pete's Bowl. Still made the most of it.

Hit Beaver Creek on Saturday.

Bigger

Snowball fight in the moguls.

T-shirt Skiing.

Back to Boulder for a relaxing Sunday with Paul, Rebecca, and Russell. Got in a game of dangle balls, cornhole, and took a spin through town on the perfect sunny, 75 degree day.

Bigger

Goofballs.
